Rare Earth (NdFeB) Magnets
A neodymium magnets or NIB magnets (a variety of rare-earth magnet) are powerful magnets made out of combinations of neodymium, iron, and boron- Nd2Fe14B. NdFeB magnets are available in a number of different grades and sizes. A sintered - fine NdFeB powder is compacted in a die and then sintered, thus fusion of the powder into a solid material takes place.
- Bonded-this is a technique whereby a special form of NdFeB powder is blended with a plastic carrier material, die pressed and then heated.
- Injection Molded - NdFeB powder is blended with a plastic material and injection molded. Very intricate parts can be made with this process.
NdFeB magnets are prone to oxidation and generally require some form of coating. Nickel plating is commonly used for this purpose. Neodymium magnets should always be handled carefully. Larger neodymium magnets can severely pinch skin or fingers, or even break bones when suddenly attracted to a ferromagnetic object.
Applications: NdFeB magnets have the highest energy and coercivity. Also they have better temperature stability than Samarium Cobalt magnets. Typical Applications Include
- Magnetic Separators
- Holding Magnets
- Computer discs
- Microphone Assemblies
- Magnetic Toys
- Cow Magnets
